LOCATION & GEOGRAPHY
Togo is one of the smallest countries in West Africa. It has borders with Benin in the East, Ghana in the West and Burkina Faso in the North. In the South, on the Bight of Benin, the country opens on the Atlantic Ocean. To the South-west a low plateau rises gradually, followed by a South-west, North-east mountain range. Togo is mostly flat. Savannah type vegetation dominates. The coastal region is covered with extensive marshes and lagoons. Roughly, a quarter of the land is arable and forested with the remaining part-unused. The country is divided climatically into Southern and Northern zones. In the Southern part, a tropical and humid climate prevails all through the year. In the North, temperatures fluctuate and humidity is less.
