ICCD Secretary-General’s Meeting with the President of Mauritania
Out of the Islamic Chamber’s belief in the dire need to take all the appropriate measures that ensure the social and economic development of its member countries, ICCD organized a regional forum entitled “Microfinance in Africa – Promising Opportunities and an Innovative Model” on December 19-20, 2022 in Nouakchott, Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
The forum aimed at raising awareness about the significance of microfinance in providing innovative and accessible financing methods that contribute to the development of the social standards of citizens, supporting the engagement of vulnerable groups in economic activities and encouraging entrepreneurship and women empowerment in Africa.
In the light of the Mauritanian government’s support for ICCD’s efforts to advance economic development in Mauritania and the African continent, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania received H.E. Mr. Yousef Khalawi, Secretary-General of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott.
A number of significant topics has been addressed during the meeting, such as exploring future prospects of mutual cooperation between the two parties, and ways of empowering the private sector to strengthen its role in the economic development process, as well as the recent updates regarding the establishment of microfinance institutions in the G5 Sahel countries.
The meeting was in the presence of H.E. Ms. Safiya bint Intah, Minister of Social Affairs, Children and Family of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Bab Ould Aleh, President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the G5 Sahel countries and President of the Mauritanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, H.E. Ambassador Tarek Ali Bekhit, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Moreover, H.E. Mr. Yousef Khalawi, Secretary-General of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development, met also with the Minister of Finance of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania Mr. Isslmou Ould Mohamed M’bady, in his office, where they discussed ways of strengthening cooperation between the two parties in areas of encouraging investment, promoting the private sector towards the advancement of Mauritania and the African continent.
With the purpose of empowering the private sector, H.E. Mr. Yousef Khalawi, Secretary-General of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development, met with the Mauritanian businessmen in the presence of H.E. Mr. Ahmed Bab Ould Aleh, President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the G5 Sahel countries and President of the Mauritanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, at the Mauritanian Chamber’s headquarters, to explore various mechanisms of activating the role of the private sector as an engine for the development process.
ICCD’s regional forum “Microfinance in Africa: Promising Opportunities and an Innovative Model” is part of its endeavors to promote the concept of microfinance globally and provide a prosperous life for its member countries.
Accordingly, ICCD stresses its strenuous commitment of take all the ways and measurements that guarantee the advancement of economic development across the OIC 57 member countries and the world at large.
About ICCD:
Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development is an international institution affiliated of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It represents the private sector of 57 member countries of OIC, as well as observer members and other associate members from Muslim minorities. ICCD aims at strengthening cooperation among its member states in the areas of trade, Industry, and information technology, and promoting Investment opportunities and joint- projects among member states. Its membership consists of national chambers, unions, councils of chambers of commerce and industry in OIC member states.
ICCD was established based on the decision of the Seventh Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers, which took place In May, 1976 in Istanbul, Turkey. And was adopted by the first conference of chambers of commerce and industry in the Islamic world countries, which also held in Istanbul, Turkey in Oct., 1977.
Later, the constitution of ICCD was passed by the second conference of chambers of commerce and Industry in Islamic world countries, which held in Dec., 1978 in Karachi. Its headquarters in Karachi, the economic capital of the Republic of Pakistan.
